M.S. 137 Grading and Instructional Philosophy

The grading policy for Middle School 137 recognizes that students may demonstrate their learning through different methods, including assessments, writing, and discussion. By assessing students through several categories, teachers are able to gather a variety of data to inform instruction and design learning experiences that promote progress for all learners.

Mandatory Grading Policy for All Subjects

Grades are a reflection of students’ understanding and command of content, their progression through a course or subject, and their mastery of skills at a given point in time.

Note: A grade of 65 is the minimum score a student can receive
to pass a course

Note: The lowest score a student can receive is a 55.

In 8th grade, the score on the Regents exam is not included in the final grade for the course.The final grade for the year is an average of all marking period grades.

School Policy for Make-Up Assignments and Late Work

  • Work for each quarter must be submitted before the end of each marking period, unless arrangements are made with the teacher.
  • Students who are absent must make up missing work/homework within three days of returning, unless arrangements are made with the teacher. Work submitted after this will have points deducted.
  • If a student needs to request an extension for an assignment, this must be arranged with the teacher before the date that the assignment is due.
  • Unless an extension for an assignment is requested and approved, assignments must be submitted by the date that they are due. Assignments submitted after this will have points deducted based on the weight of the assignment.
